Skipping Breakfast May Raise Depression Risk
Over 264 million individuals globally are estimated to suffer from depression, highlighting the widespread impact of this complex mental health disorder. In a study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, researchers found that breakfast skippers had higher instances of depression than those who ate a morning meal.
For this study, researchers looked at data from 21,865 adults participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2007 and 2018. For that survey, individuals disclosed what they ate, including whether they ate breakfast. The researchers analyzed their food intake based on the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII), classifying participants as eating either a pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory diet.
What the researchers found is that eating a pro-inflammatory diet (high DII) and regularly skipping breakfast were linked to a higher risk of depression. Additionally, they found that the effect of eating breakfast on depression was influenced by the level of inflammation in the body, with around a quarter of the association between breakfast consumption and depression being explained by inflammation. These findings were consistent regardless of factors such as age, lifestyle habits, and self-reported chronic illnesses.

Avocados May Reduce Diabetes Risk for Women
Avocados are rich in healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, making them beneficial for heart health, weight management, and promoting overall well-being. Now, a new study shows eating avocados may also lower the risk of developing diabetes, particularly for women.
For a study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, researchers looked at data from 25,640 adults who participated in the Mexican National Survey of Health and Nutrition. More than half of the participants were female, with over 60% exhibiting abdominal obesity.
Participants reported their avocado consumption over seven days, and researchers categorized them as either "avocado consumers" or "non-consumers," regardless of the quantity consumed. Additionally, participants disclosed whether they had received a diagnosis of high blood sugar or diabetes from a healthcare provider, along with providing information on various socioeconomic, demographic, health, and lifestyle factors.
Among female avocado consumers, the study found a significant 22% reduction in the risk of developing diabetes based on initial data, which increased to 29% after adjusting for relevant factors. However, this protective effect was not observed among men. Importantly, these results remained consistent regardless of whether diabetes diagnoses were self-reported or confirmed through laboratory tests.
